Dutch business failures moved higher again in August. Statistics Netherlands reported 304 bankruptcies among businesses and institutions after adjusting for the number of court-session days, up by 24 from the same month a year earlier and 38 from July.
The rate reached 8.1 bankruptcies per 100,000 businesses. That remains well below crisis-era levels, but the year-on-year increase is worth watching after a relatively subdued stretch in 2025 and early 2026.
One month does not establish a new insolvency cycle
Bankruptcies can be volatile from month to month and often lag changes in financing costs, demand and input prices. August's increase therefore needs to be read alongside subsequent months rather than treated as proof that Dutch corporate conditions have deteriorated sharply.
Still, companies are entering the autumn with renewed energy-price pressure and a European interest-rate environment that has become less supportive. Those forces can expose businesses that refinanced aggressively or depend on thin margins.
Our view: sector detail will matter more than the headline total
Dutch Business Review's view is that the next useful step is to track where failures are occurring. A rise concentrated in small consumer-facing firms has different implications from one spreading through construction, logistics or capital-intensive industry.
CBS's monthly bankruptcy series gives DBR a good base for a recurring business-stress tracker. The September and October releases will show whether August was noise or the start of a more persistent turn.
