The Dutch semiconductor industry is often compressed into one company: ASML. That misses why the ecosystem is strategically difficult to reproduce. The Netherlands has important positions in lithography, deposition, assembly and packaging, chip design, photonics, precision mechatronics and systems engineering.
Those layers connect through a supplier and research network concentrated around Brainport Eindhoven but extending across the country.
Equipment is the most globally distinctive layer
ASML, ASM International and Besi operate in different parts of semiconductor manufacturing. Lithography patterns wafers, deposition builds material layers and advanced packaging connects multiple dies and memory into higher-performance systems.
Their markets are distinct, but all benefit from increasing manufacturing complexity at leading-edge nodes and in AI-oriented systems.
Product chip companies add a different demand cycle
NXP and Nexperia sell semiconductor products rather than capital equipment. Their exposure is therefore more closely tied to automotive, industrial, connectivity and power-electronics demand.
Keeping equipment and product companies separate makes the Dutch cluster easier to analyse across cycles.
