ASML's headquarters in Veldhoven are often treated as the centre of the Dutch semiconductor story, but the company itself is only the visible apex of a much larger industrial system. In its 2025 annual report, ASML reported around 5,100 suppliers worldwide, including approximately 1,600 in the Netherlands.
That number matters because advanced lithography cannot be reduced to one factory assembling machines. EUV and high-NA systems depend on thousands of specialised components, modules, software layers and engineering services that have to perform at extreme tolerances. Many of those capabilities sit inside long-term supplier relationships rather than commodity procurement markets.
The Brainport model is built around co-development
ASML describes its Veldhoven base as a hub for development, engineering and manufacturing, with supplier proximity supporting real-time collaboration and faster innovation cycles. That is a different model from a simple buyer-seller relationship where specifications are fixed and components are sourced primarily on price.
For highly complex systems, suppliers often help solve engineering problems alongside ASML. That makes accumulated know-how difficult to replicate quickly. A supplier may specialise in motion control, ultra-clean manufacturing, vacuum-compatible assemblies, electronics, precision machining or software, but its real value comes from knowing how that capability integrates into the wider system.
Why 1,600 Dutch suppliers is both a strength and a risk
A dense domestic supplier network gives ASML short feedback loops, deep engineering labour markets and a pool of companies accustomed to low-volume, high-complexity manufacturing. The same concentration creates exposure to regional bottlenecks. Housing, transport, grid capacity and technical labour availability can constrain several suppliers at once.
That is one reason Project Beethoven is broader than support for ASML itself. Government investment in housing, transport, education and grid capacity is effectively investment in the conditions under which the entire Brainport supply chain can continue to expand.
The supplier base extends beyond Brainport
Brainport is the highest-density cluster, but the Dutch semiconductor ecosystem also reaches Twente, Delft, Groningen, Almere, Duiven and other locations. ASM is headquartered in Almere, Besi in Duiven, and universities and research institutes across the country support materials, photonics, electronics and manufacturing expertise.

Where a supplier relationship is publicly disclosed, companies can be classified by function such as precision engineering, mechatronics, optics, electronics, software, cleanroom infrastructure and industrial services.
That approach keeps the research useful even as contracts change. The core question is which capabilities make the Dutch ecosystem hard to reproduce and where capacity constraints could become commercially material.
