ASML’s headquarters are in Veldhoven, not Eindhoven city. That small geographic distinction explains a much larger business story: the Netherlands’ most visible semiconductor company belongs to a regional economy whose production, research and labour markets cross municipal boundaries.
Brainport’s regional overview describes 21 municipalities, more than 800,000 inhabitants and over 6,000 high-tech companies. These are regional promotional figures, reviewed in August 2026, not a statistical definition of Eindhoven city or a verified census of semiconductor businesses. The distinction matters when comparing population, output or employment with another Dutch region.
An economy organised around complex production
The economic significance of the region lies in the connections between equipment, electronics, software and specialised manufacturing. A precision component may have limited value on its own but become indispensable inside a qualified industrial system. That gives supplier relationships and process knowledge a different importance from the network effects of a consumer internet business.
ASML locations identify Veldhoven as the group’s global headquarters. NXP in the Netherlands identifies Eindhoven as its headquarters location. Their roles are distinct: lithography equipment and semiconductor products belong to different parts of the industry. Neither should be used as a shorthand for every company operating nearby.

The company map is broader than one anchor
VDL Enabling Technologies Group describes development and manufacturing capabilities for complex systems. Prodrive Technologies works in electronics and other mission-critical technology. These are different types of business from a chip designer, even where they serve customers in related industrial markets.
SMART Photonics and TU/e describe a partnership around indium-phosphide photonic integration. Axelera at High Tech Campus provides another example of the region’s chip-related activity, focused on AI computing. A company’s presence in this ecosystem does not establish that it has a disclosed supply contract with ASML.
The company table is a functional map, not a ranking of local employers. Company-wide employee totals would not tell readers how many jobs are based inside the 21-municipality region. We therefore do not attach worldwide headcounts to regional rows or label an incomplete list as the largest employers.
Research campuses matter when knowledge reaches production
A university relationship can provide technical expertise, equipment access and recruitment routes. The commercial test comes later: whether a process can produce consistent output, whether a customer qualifies it and whether manufacturing economics support repeat orders. A research announcement and a scalable product are different milestones.
Brainport Industries Campus brings manufacturing businesses and associated facilities into one industrial setting. Its role is best understood alongside the region’s research activity, rather than treated as another technology office park. Shared location can shorten coordination, but it does not remove a supplier’s need to meet quality, delivery and cost requirements.
For smaller companies, the useful campus question is specific: which capability would be difficult to obtain elsewhere, and does access accelerate a product or reduce its risk? An impressive tenant list is not sufficient evidence of commercial collaboration.
Housing, transport and skills set the pace of expansion
The Brainport public-facilities and talent package announced in April 2024 put a €2.5 billion commitment behind facilities and a national talent plan. That is an announced package, not evidence that the money had all been spent or the infrastructure completed by August 2026.
The business logic is straightforward. Hiring additional engineers also requires somewhere for them to live and a workable journey to the workplace. A supplier expanding a production line may need technicians, planners and maintenance staff as well as researchers. Growth that focuses only on graduates misses part of the labour requirement.

A company considering Brainport still needs confirmation for its own connection, load profile and expansion timetable; national investment plans cannot guarantee capacity at an individual address.
What to examine before investing or locating a business
Start with the customer and the production requirement, then work through skills, premises, utilities and transport. Check whether the available building supports the required cleanroom, vibration, temperature or power specifications. An office vacancy rate says little about the availability of suitable industrial space.
For startup analysis, separate funding announcements from customer adoption. For workforce analysis, ask for local employment and vacancies rather than global headcount. For regional comparisons, keep Brainport, Eindhoven municipality and North Brabant province as distinct geographic units.
DBR’s view is that Brainport’s advantage is the accumulated ability to develop and manufacture difficult systems. Its growth constraint is the practical capacity to support more of that work. The next useful indicators are delivery of facilities, trained workers and qualified production, rather than the volume of promotional announcements.
