ASML has spent much of its history as a highly specialised supplier known mainly inside the semiconductor industry. In 2026 it has become something else: one of Europe's most closely watched public companies and a direct equity-market proxy for the scale of artificial-intelligence infrastructure spending.
Reuters reported in July that ASML's shares had risen about 60% in 2026 and pushed the company close to a $700 billion valuation after strong second-quarter results. Several analysts published price targets that implied a market value approaching $1 trillion. The idea is no longer mathematically absurd, but the path remains dependent on an unusually concentrated set of assumptions.
ASML owns a bottleneck the industry cannot easily bypass
The core of the bull case is extreme ultraviolet lithography. ASML is the only commercial supplier of EUV systems used for the most advanced logic and memory manufacturing. Every new generation of AI accelerators ultimately depends on manufacturing processes that require increasingly sophisticated lithography.
This gives ASML a different economic position from a conventional equipment maker. Customers can delay projects, adjust spending or negotiate delivery schedules, but they cannot simply replace an EUV system with a competing product from another vendor. That scarcity is why investors increasingly value the company more like a critical technology platform than a cyclical industrial supplier.
The trillion-dollar case still depends on customer spending
Scarcity does not eliminate cyclicality. ASML's customers include the world's largest chip manufacturers, and their capital budgets depend on demand from cloud companies, smartphone makers, memory buyers and governments. If hyperscalers slow AI infrastructure spending, the effects eventually move backward through chip orders and into equipment demand.
Execution also matters. The semiconductor supply chain is complex, and ASML relies on a large network of specialist suppliers. Expanding output is not as simple as adding another assembly line. Lead times, component quality and customer fab schedules can all constrain how quickly revenue converts from a large order book into delivered systems.
For the Netherlands, ASML is now an economic policy issue too
ASML's importance extends well beyond its share price. The company anchors a supplier ecosystem around Eindhoven and Veldhoven, competes globally for engineering talent and sits directly inside trade disputes over advanced technology exports. Dutch infrastructure, housing and immigration policy increasingly affect the environment in which that ecosystem operates.
Whether ASML reaches a trillion-dollar valuation is ultimately a market question. The more durable national question is whether the Netherlands can keep the surrounding industrial cluster competitive as the company becomes larger, more geopolitically important and more dependent on infrastructure that is already under pressure.
